So, today I want to talk about art block. It’s been something I’ve had to deal with a lot lately. Point blank, it SUCKS. You feel awful like you’ve lost your way, when the only thing you want to do is create. That in turn makes it worse almost creating this weird downward spiral. Sometimes you get lucky and wake up after a few days able to conquer the world. Other times, it works a lot like how my own art block works. You get backed up for weeks. You feel lost.
They way I deal with art block is I watch a ton of videos of fellow creators online and just absorb everything they say and take notes on how they do things. Each day, I go over my notes and then sleep on it. Usually it sparks something weird creating lucid dreaming giving me ideas.
However, there are days where it just takes a good swift kick from a friend to bring me out of it even though they are going through their own shit at the same time. It reminds me I’m not alone.
How to deal with an art block – our artist explains!
Hey Strangers!
Today we’d like to talk about art block. Every artist of every artform knows it. The block that hinders you from creating. We asked one of our artists about how to deal with an art block. This is what Ashley said:
An art block sucks. But there will be better days.
I’ve had to deal with art blocks a lot lately. And point blank, it sucks. You will feel awful. Almost like you lost your way, even though you just want to create. Leaving you with a downward spiral because you feel bad about not having created new art. But there will be better days. Sometimes you only need a few days of rest to restart your creative flow. If it doesn’t get better after a few days and you can’t jump out of your bed like usually, here’s what I do.
You are not alone.
First of all, think of an art block as something every artist comes across at least once in their lifetime. Most of my friends are artists and, on some days, it just takes a good swift kick from a friend to bring me out of this crisis.
Watch fellow creators - seriously. Artists are never alone.
Give fellow creators a watch. If no kick and no sleep help, I usually just go online and watch my favorite artists how they do their art. I absorb everything they say and even take notes. I learn as much as possible, pick up a new skill or improve existing ones. Then I go over my notes and sleep on it. And like magic, it sparks a weird lucid dream. It gives me ideas and as a counter for the art block it hands me back my creativity.
And then I just go for it. Live my creativity. And you should do so, too! Right now!
I hope my tips on how to deal with an art block will help you on your creative journey.
Artists are never alone.
It reminds me that as artists we should be more willing to stick together, compete less, and strive for greatness together. Just remember. Sometimes, you just need a swift kick..
